Playground Landscape Design and Planning

This large playground is nested on the side of a hill protecting it from the main Jackson’s View estate drive. The playground design is far enough from the wetland not to cause concern but close enough to the shelter and picnic facilities to be supervised by families enjoying what the main park has to offer.

Designed as an “all-ability” playground, it offers sensory experiences throughout and wheelchair access to 70% of the activities. There was a conscious decision to include the following features:

  • A toddlers area, separate from the more senior children
  • Equipment suitable from age 2 to 18
  • A wide range of activities such as climbing, spinning, swinging, sliding, hiding…
  • Tactile experiences with the use of varied materials such as concrete, stainless steel, wood, plastic, rubber, soft and rough leaved plants
  • Scented plants
  • Coloured concrete paths for wheelchairs and tricycles

Based on the theme of West Gippsland Endangered Animals, the playground offers not only opportunities for local and other Victorian artists to be involved in the provision of sculptural play-equipment but also educational (and fun!) experiences for the children and their parents.
